
Geological teaching was first started in the "Agricultural Institute" as a section of it which was founded in 1933 in Ankara. This section was letter moved into the "Department of Natural Sciences" of the Science Faculty in 1943, by following the foundation of Ankara University. The German scientists who came into Turkey during "World War II" gave great support to the development of the departments and the institutes of the Universities in those years. Among them Prof. Dr. Salomon Calvi is known and remembered as the founder of the Geology Department of Ankara University. The traces of his endeavor and enthusiasms for setting up a Geology Department of Natural Sciences in 1966 as Geology Department.
The education of Engineering in geology as a degree was started in 1972 by the new organizing of the department as Geological Engineering.
