General Information

Divisions of General Geology, Ore Deposists and Geochemistry, Mineralogy-Petrography, and Applied Geology constitute the department having 26 academic staff, 14 research assistants. Each year 80 undergraduates and approximately 25 postgraduate students are accepted. The undergraduate students use the laboratory facilities for the courses of Mineralogy-Petrography, Palaeontology, Sedimentology, Coal Geology, Petroleum Geology and Soil Mechanics. In addition, the collection room and the museum are open to use for all students. Computers, microscopes, DTA, and electron microscopy, sharing with Biology Department, are provided for postgraduate courses and research.

The department lacks advanced laboratory equipment, however, the analyses of detailed field studies are usually carried out in the Mineral Research and Exploration Institute, Turkish Petroleum Corporation and Etibank. Alternatively, this disadvantage is tried to be overcome by the joint research projects with the overseas universities.
